The Door & Trim Store has worked really hard to maintain our competitive advantage and to remain the lowest price option for Doors and mouldings in the Phoenix and Mesa areas. As we approach the summer season our contractors are starting earlier and earlier. In order to accommodate them and to keep our prices down we are changing our Will Call hours. We will now be open for material pickup from 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM Monday through Friday.

Replacement doors (Run to Spec doors)

Replacing worn or outdated doors can be one of the simplest ways to update a home. Molded panel doors are available in a number of styles to give your home a new, fresh look. Knotty Alder doors can give your house a really rustic look. Panel doors in pine or fir can be stained for elegance.

The process can be as simple and economical as you want it to be from the least expensive with your total involvement to fully turn-key, where you tell us what you want and we do all the rest. If that's what you want, call us now at 480-668-6396 and we'll arrange an appointment.

If you want the least expensive solution we have some forms for you to fill out (available on the forms page at www.doorandtrimstore.com or we can e-mail them to you). We'll prepare some doors for you and you pick them up in a few days and switch them out with your existing doors.

If you really want to have fun, buy one of the doors from the Big Box Stores and then follow the 10 steps outlined in these instructions from "This Old House". You'll have the time of your life!

Our standard doors come 79-1/2" tall, beveled both sides for clearance and will be bored for a standard residential door knob 44" down from the top. Standard widths are 23-13/16", 27-13/16", 29-13/16", 31-13/16", 35-13/16". Some door styles are available in other sizes, usually at additional cost, but these sizes will be suitable for most replacements. We use a shorthand designation of nominal sizes by the foot and inch, namely, a door 23-13/16" by 79-1/2" is called a 2068 for 2 feet 0 inches by 6 feet 8 inches. Also 2468, 2668, 2868, 3068, etc. Doors are available in full call-out sizes from the big box, home improvement stores, but they generally do not fit your openings and require a lot of cutting and trimming to fit in a normal door opening.

Because our doors are beveled on the sides to open properly, it is necessary to call out the handing for them to be prepared properly. There are many ways to call out the handing, but in our shop we use the Arizona residential handing method, which can also be called the hinging method. It goes simply like this, one stands on the inside of the door, in other words, the side towards which one pulls the door, or in other words, the side on which one can see the hinges when the door is closed. From that position, namely from the inside of the door, on which side are the hinges, right side or left side? We call this Right Hand or Left Hand, namely right hinge or left hinge, designated in our shorthand (RH) or (LH). The big box stores use the opposite designation, which is okay as long as one knows. The call-out goes back to the way the doors are prepped in the door shops.

Standard interior doors come with 2 or 3 pair of 3-1/2" hinges. Many hinges have a large radius on their corners about the size of a nickel of 5/8". Some have a tight corner radius of 1/4". A few have square corners. They are easy to tell apart. Our standard prep is for 5/8" radius hinges. We charge extra for 1/4" radius and square cuts.

There is no standard for hinge placement, so hinge measurements must be taken. Because doors may be different lengths, measurements are taken from the top of the door. They are taken from the top of the door to the top of each hinge. Measurements are not generally taken between hinges. Measurements are normally taken to the nearest 1/16", but tolerances up to 1/8" can be acceptable if good techniques are used to install the doors.

Many experienced installers use the following method to install new doors in existing frames. One half hinges are applied to both the door and the frame. The screws are only applied loosely so that there is still some play in the hinges. The hinge halves are lined up and the pins placed one at a time. After all the pins are placed, the screws are tightened. The hinges will normally set even if there are small variances in the alignment. It will be useful to have a power screwdriver/drill, chisel, utility knife, and wood filler. Sometimes card stock or other shims may be needed to adjust the hinge depth. Minor discrepancies can be expected in hinge and door alignment and most can be adjusted with just a little work on the installers part. A little shim or filler on the door or jamb is hardly noticeable on a completed job with new doors.

Jimmy Chase has joined The Door and Trim Store as door shop manager. Jimmy is a tremendous individual with an impressive resume and even more impressive skills and work habits. He comes to us with a wide range of experience in door building and woodworking. He started working in a door shop at age 18 and has honed his skills a several shops. He has worked for a number of years as an installer and impressed the Pulte organization enough to head their East side door and trim installations. He knows all the issues and potential challenges facing today's installers and contractors. Jimmy's background helps us to anticipate and solve possible problems.

We feel confident that Jimmy will help The Door and Trim Store reach and maintain the highest levels of customer service and satisfaction with any kind of doors.

Cabinets

We don't talk about it much, but The Door & Trim Store carries some really nice cabinets at very competitive prices. Our main line is Sollid Cabinets. They are Birch and Alder cabinets milled and finished out of the country and assembled in Gilbert, Arizona.

Sollid Cabinets are built with the highest quality materials in a modular cabinet. They use dovetail drawers, plywood cases, and self-closing drawer guides. Labor Day is past and everyone is back to work. We have been really fortunate to stay busy. If anyone knows some really good door and trim people or good customer service people with some knowledge in doors, windows, cabinets and or trim, we would love to meet them and include them in our team. We would really like to beef up our door shop production.
